Writing goals for 2017!

It’s amazing to think it is 2017! Where has the time gone? I ask myself this every single day, and everyday I plan to accomplish a word count or a scene, half a scene or something! But, and I hate to say it my writing groove has vacated the premises. I realize since August 2015 things haven’t been quite the same, and without him it’s been quite a challenge for me to commit whole-heartedly to writing.

How does one pick up after losing your number one confidant? I mean he’s the reason I started the journey of writing. Midnight (the second book in the No Death for the Wicked series) was the last book he was reading, so in saying all this Memoirs of a Superhero will be my first novel without his loyal support and his loving encouragement.

Don’t get me wrong. My heart still beats  fervently for writing and I have a couple of stories brewing inside me, but if I can stick with my goals for this year, like completing Memoirs of a Superhero. And pursuing  Mary Jane (the next installment in the Deadwood short stories) and Citeron (book two in the Veil Realms series), well I think you get the picture – it’s time to get the ball rolling!

So without further ado, here’s a little snippet of Memoirs of a Superhero –

“Lacey? I think Mia might reschedule for this weekend and you haven’t been to Mr. Lockwood’s residence yet…would you consider it?” Remi questions, she eases back in her chair donning a candid grin. All eyes fall directly on me and before I can protest and throw in all my analytical reasons, Remi points her long pink painted nail at me and chides, “You work the desk night and day, Lacey, and we think you need a break from the office.”

“We?” I query pushing my glasses farther up the bridge of my nose. I roam my eyes around the break room, not sure how this even came about, my role behind the desk has been cyclical, maybe even trite at times. A thought surfaces to my mind as I guzzle down the rest of my coffee, my life is structured by the book, straight and orderly. Precisely, from seven to five I’m a business owner. After hours, I make excuses as to why I can’t meet for drinks or late night dinners. My time is consumed with cheats and low-lives stalking the streets of Fairwater. And as of late, things crime wise, have been rather dull. Exactly the same for my love life, dismally and pathetically dull. I step over to the sink and rinse out my  coffee mug debating with who would be a better candidate than myself. “Remi, don’t you have one other client early Saturday morning? Mr. Lockwood’s appointment isn’t until five-thirty…”

“Oh, Lacey… don’t start to pencil me in just yet,” Remi replies jumping to her feet, her full-figured hip leans against the counter-top. “I have plans remember? Rob’s taking me to a concert Saturday night, besides we all think you need to check out Mr. Lockwood’s place.” Her arms fold over her chest as she quietly nods, urging everyone around us to agree. The room strums with approval.

“We?” I mumble again. “I know what you’re trying to do Remi—”

“What? Take a peek at a guy that looks too good to be true?”

I wave toward the laptop, the same laptop still showcasing his handsome face and explain, “I already know what he looks like…”

She moves closer. “But with his shirt off?”

“What?!” My brows scrunch together in surprise, my cheeks warm with heat and I can’t seem to do anything else except blink. “Wha—whenwhy were you watching him get dressed?” I mumble out.

She taps a nail along her forearm and says, “He was undressing.” She emphasis the un part with a growing smile and adds, “I had just brought Nibs home from our evening walk and he barreled past me slinging off his shirt and ran upstairs. I wasn’t sure if I should go see where the fire was, but for a split moment I knew there was a God because I had just been graced by the most well-defined man on the planet.”

Mia pipes in, “I wasn’t as lucky, but last weekend I was hanging Nibs’ leash up in the foyer when I noticed clothes flung all across the floor. His expensive Stefano dress shoes were chucked off to one side and then there were his slacks, jacket and shirt sprinkled all over the steps. The way it looked to me, he wasn’t alone and whoever she was did an amazing job of stripping him down.”

“And why is this any concern of ours? I smirk trying to act aloof. This is the last thing I need in my life, a charismatic, attractive egocentric male parading his manliness around.

“Don’t you think he sends off this vibe like he’s some sort of lone wolf? A riddle to be solved?” Donna quizzes standing up. She tips her short pixie cut blonde hair to one side and glances at the screen. “He’s single, never been married, moved here just a few months ago and owns some sort of notable technology company.” She sits on the edge of the table tallying off each point. “His company doesn’t even reside here…”

“So?” I state and walk toward the laptop. “It’s his business, he can operate anywhere in the world, that doesn’t necessarily make him an anomaly.” I tap a few keys and close his profile. “But, just to prove a point that there’s nothing riddling about this man I’ll go.”

Donna runs her hand down my forearm, her neatly trimmed brows lift as she offers, “Lacey, believe me when I say, some men make sense, some are work driven slaves, some have their secret addictions, sex, drugs to online pornography, but Mr. Lockwood, he’s something entirely different and you’re—

“And I’m going to come back Monday morning and tell you he’s nothing more than a boring reclusive man.”

“Good books don’t give up all their secrets at once.” ― Stephen King

Mindnight banner for blog

When I first started writing out the story for ‘Daylight’ which is the first book in the No Death for the Wicked series, it was for a Halloween anthology dedicated to a charity. It was meant to be a short story with a limited word count and a wonderful opportunity to write with so many talented writers. As most now know the story has evolved and I am currently writing book 2 Midnight. As soon as I am finished with Midnight I will announce the release date, which I’m hoping will be sometime next month.

It is the ultimate challenge, writing a book with balance. As an author, I want to write a book that is capturing, intriguing and brings you along as my characters live out their lives. But here’s the thing with my writing, I write what the characters show me, they are the ones that take me down the writing path. I follow their lead.  Do I want to be an author that is too easy? Predictable or boring? Well I certainly hope not, but do I want to give up everything to you in the first book? No, I don’t. I want you to desire for more, to have unanswered questions that stick with you and allow the secrets not yet whispered into your ear to bring you along as the full story unfolds, whether it’s one stand alone book or a series.

Daylight, my first book in the No Death for the Wicked series, is a great example of this. I understand that my readers are open minded, thought provoking, and intelligent.  So, I don’t fill my book with explanations of why a Reaper (Graham) and a young vampire (Mattie) have an instant attraction. Book two, Midnight, will bring more of this to light and book three, (Untitled) will wrap it up.

I also don’t dive into much of the backstory of Mattie or Graham because the first book is more of a discovery into who they are right now. How they handle themselves in different situations. What are their boundaries, or restrictions? What are their strengths or weaknesses?

There is so much in Daylight that can be expanded on, and that’s the fun part of a series. Why was Mattie so stuck in being young?  How did Mattie’s Mother Dearest control and use her? Why is Graham so thunderstruck with Mattie? Why can’t Mattie get enough of Graham? What’s the deal with the serum Daylight? How is the serum made? What’s the rest of the world like outside of Solace? Are there other vampires out there? How does Pandora fit into the picture going forward? Or does she? Why wasn’t Krew a truly evil bastard? Was he really meant to be the villain or just someone representing the other side?

All of these questions and much more are set into Daylight for a reason. The answers are my secrets. Secrets to be whispered to you as you read along with the rest of the series. And that’s the real trick isn’t it? In Midnight you’ll find out more about the questions above, more secrets will rise up too. The one thing you can rest assured is that I will always wrap up my books with a nice little bow at the end so that you’re not left hanging.

Midnight coming soon…

Soon, very soon, I will publish my last book in the series. The Crescent Bound series, and with the amazing, incredible talent from Inkstain Interior Book Designing we shall have it (hopefully) in our hands this Halloween.  Which book you may ask? Ice Bound, the inside look from Marc’s point of view of Crescent Bound. Long awaited answers will be revealed, a new depth to Marc that some may not have known about, and where they all end up after seven years. This story was extremely difficult for me to write. During my writing process our oldest son had some major health  concerns.  We tackled the worst of the storms and I hope  everyone can understand my reasons for delaying the release of Ice Bound.

Now, for some insight into this particular story…

Naomi

Naomi

Naomi – the rogue witch will be part of the story but not as prominent  as she was in Crescent Bound. My intention wasn’t to fully duplicate Crescent Bound, and to truly bring you Marc’s story. Besides you’ve already read Crescent Bound and it unravels everything in it. Yes, there will be magick, the elements, and entirely new scenes in Ice Bound.

The New and Upcoming…

I haven’t had a chance to connect much on my blogs lately. I am here now to give you the scoop on all the new and upcoming novels I am working on. With my Vampire novel, Daylight, out (my newest release available on Amazon).  I can redirect my focus back to Shadow Bound (the 4th book in the Crescent Bound Series). We have just recently designed the cover as well as Ice Bound’s cover, yes, I said ‘Ice Bound’!

Ice Bound will be the final installment of the series and it will be in Marc’s point of view. I’ve had several questions regarding certain aspects in Crescent Bound and I promise all will be revealed in time. And who better than Marc for that task.

I would like to add the covers and announce that they will be on Goodreads soon… with a pending due date.

Marcus Colten is living the perfect life, high school football star and dating the head cheerleader. He is popular, skilled in athletics and from a wealthy family. The football team he quarterbacks for just won their first district championship.  Marc doesn’t show it, but he is being haunted. Orphaned at the early age of two, he has ghostly memories of a past that makes his flawless model life feel out of place and then there are the illusive dreams. Visions of someone that relentlessly possess his nights. What does it all mean? Where will it all lead? This time, he’s not the one that is at the top of the game.

I’m really looking forward in concluding The Crescent Bound Series and sad at the same time. I will reveal more of the Veil Realm series soon with my cast.   I want to leave you with a little snippet of the Veil Realm Series.

The Next Big Thing – Interview with Tessa Stokes – Author of – Devon Ruthin and A Vampire in Love (Volume one of The Ruthin Trilogy)

Hello everyone!  Today, we have another amazing author, Tessa Stokes with us.  Tessa has several novels under her belt covering Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy as well as Young Adult genres.  Book one of “The Ruthin Trilogy” is “Devon Ruthin and A Vampire in Love” which is an Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance combination.

Tessa, thank you for taking your time to share with everyone a little about yourself and your work.

To get things started, Tessa, writing under the genres of Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy, which require building an entire world around your characters.  Can you tell us what it took to create the world of Devon Ruthin?

That’s a really good question and has made me think about what I did do. I remember getting the idea for the book after visiting a medieval market town in the south west of England. It has a Norman abbey with some extraordinarily old tombs and effigies in there and I just started thinking about this character who could live in a town like that hidden amongst everyone else. Suddenly I had a whole crowd of characters in my head. They are the ancient beings in the story and then along comes Bliss and who does she meet? Well my gorgeous character Devon and then the story just went wild. I don’t know how I built the world it just came out of my head onto the computer. That’s how I write most times. A character suddenly speaks to me and we’re off and writing madly.

I am sure when Devon spoke to you that you realized “vampires” are a very hot commodity today, there are many books out there to choose from.  What is it about your vampires that you want everyone to know which may set them apart from other authors?

I wish I could say something more convincing but I think my vampires are such characters they are identifiable. You know them. There’s Greta hiding her lust for Drew and yet being in love with Pearl. Pearl that cool as an iced coffee, sharp as a knife vampire who is the epitome of a powerful person gone wrong. As she says herself, ‘she’s the least trustworthy person she knows’. The young vampire woman who loves Drew and searches his pockets for signs he has another lover. The vampire community live with what they are in various ways. Drew uses it to his full advantage and he’s a bad boy vampire with a weird past and a weirder future, if you continue to read the Trilogy. His companions are supposed to be funny sometimes. They do Drew’s bidding out of some misplaced loyalty in volume one but they start to question that in volume two and in their sudden realization that Drew is no longer as dangerous as he was they become more confident and have opinions. Jake who suddenly wants a window painted with seaweed patterns. The fun elements are to offset the darkness of Drew who in volume one is a consummate killer and the strange echo of darkness surrounding the ancient magical beings.

I agree that character personalities is core to a successful book, and speaking of success, ever since the Beatles, Americans have been crazy for anything British.  How do you think being from the UK may give you an advantage over other authors?

I don’t actually think that. It never entered my head and now you’ve asked I can’t see it being an advantage. The scenes I paint in my books are of English places and the voices are quite English, but I hope that the emotional content is universal, and that’s what is important to me that everyone actually gets the characters, engages with them and the story.

I agree, emotional content is definitely universal, take Devon for example, he is a true romantic at heart, no matter his background.  When you were creating him, how hard was it to bring a Vampire over to the side of love and still not lose the Vampire in him?

Interesting question. Not hard at all. I think he moved towards love when he saw his own kind (vampires) turning against each other. It primed him to question them and their way of life, including his own. Of course that element of his move to love was facilitated by my creation of the community of ancient magical beings. They incidentally are loosely based on people in the ancient world.

How wonderfully creative.  Now Devon’s love interest is Bliss and she is a doll, her sweetness and vulnerability resonates from the pages.  Was it hard to bring her out of her comfort zone when writing the book?

Bliss was sick to death of her life when she drove off on holiday and I have met one or two real people who like her take that leap of faith into change. I’ve met an awful lot of single women who live their life alone because somehow they never meet anyone. There’s no reason for them not to be loved and yet they are not.

There is no Devon for them and they might change their job and location but still life does not give them love. Bliss is a character in a story and so she gets it.

Bliss however is not quite finished. In volume three which I am currently writing we discover the real reason she was called Bliss, and what really happened when her mother died in that car crash. Bliss is what you say, but she has some deeper aspects not yet revealed. She’s devoted to Devon and he to her, and that will never change. When she goes after Devon in volume one it’s supposed to give you a clue that she has some deeper things going on. She was vulnerable but now Devon loves her and she will fight for him, for his survival, to protect him.

I am impressed that you delve into the world of the lonely romantic when writing your book.  I am sure it captures those hearts out there that are searching for love, giving them hope to not stop in their quest.

Now to go into the dark side of the paranormal.  Would you like to comment on the bad guys in the book?  I see a raw and untamed side and want to know more about it, please share with us your dark side.

My own dark side? I just see the world from the angle of someone who has traveled and lived in many different places and situations. I’ve worked in some eye-opening jobs in that I have seen and dealt with all segments of society, and as Greta said, “seen some things and done more”. LOL

I like to make my ‘bad guys’ not completely overtly bad. As myself, I despise violence and yet the vampire bad guys can’t help what they do. It’s in their nature. I wanted to give clues to some of them being inherently more prone to unpleasant behavior. They use each other, they lie and cheat, they have a core of cruelty that they are just born with. Then there are the bad guys who just end up that way because life just never gives them one break and so stealing, cheating, being outside of society is just their way of life. Their spirit gets broken and they think ‘what the Hell’.

Again, you have built layers to these characters that will cause a reader to absorb them fully and then, the reader will have a new found appreciation for each one.  Depth in writing is so important in romance for me anyway.

Tessa, I love your passion for writing and would you please take a moment and let everyone know what other wonderful novels you have available, also what is the next big thing?

I have the second volume of  The Ruthin trilogy available, Drew Ruthin and the Blood of changes. That book is my favorite out of the two right now because Drew just took over there and went on a journey that I never expected to be able to ‘see’ as an author. He was helped out by the emergence of Balthazar Crane. Now he is an interesting character because he enabled me to make inroads into the psyche of the ancient magical beings with ease. The second volume is also more erotic than the first volume because the love stories are more intense.

I have a standalone novel ‘Stone Kisses’ available on kindle.

It’s modern urban fantasy, a true romance, a little erotic and very endearing. I re-read it recently when I was preparing the second edition and actually fell back in love with the story. (smiles)

Stella is a young woman living alone, working at her graphic design business, and has not had a man in her life for a long time and feels very lonely.

It’s summer and she looks around her, sees only couples, and she ends up longing for love or at least kisses.

Some distance away, Apollo and Mercury live reasonably peacefully on the outskirts of town. These two gods are left over from ancient times. They have a game they play and Stella our heroine gets caught up in it.

Stella is working hard to pay her mortgage when she becomes entangled in the game.

She is in her garden and looks back at her house, she sees it needs painting but unable to afford this she decides to buy flowers for her garden to brighten it up.

In a garden center buying flowers, Stella meets Justin. He is beautiful, strong, and attracted to her. He decides to pursue her.

She also finds a garden statue she would like, a statue of Mercury the winged messenger.

Justin knows she wants the statue and he gifts it to her.

Let the game begin.

  ***

I’m working on the third volume in The Ruthin Trilogy right now. The Ruthin Pact: Volume three in The Ruthin Trilogy.

I also write a YA urban fantasy The Seven Spell Saga, and I am working on the seventh and therefor last book in that series too.

I have another standalone that is a couple of chapters in but on hold for the time being as I really do want to finish the Ruthin’s story.

Awesome, and thank you so much for being here today!
